What does Jumbo mean in Road Freight?

In road freight, a jumbo is a high-capacity truck or trailer that carries more than a standard vehicle, mainly through extra loading volume (and, in some drawbar setups, more pallet spaces) rather than more weight. It suits voluminous but light goods that fill the space before they reach the weight limit.

Types of jumbo

  • Jumbo semi-trailer (Mega): a step-frame trailer on smaller wheels that raises the internal height and lifts volume to around 100 m³ on the standard 13.6 m loading length.
  • Jumbo drawbar combination (rigid truck + trailer): two separate loading spaces that together reach around 120 m³ and up to about 38 Euro pallets.

When a jumbo is used

Jumbos are the go-to for light, bulky freight such as packaging, insulation, furniture or automotive parts, where the extra cubic metres pay off. Because the load is volume-limited, the numbers that matter most are internal height and loading metres (LDM), not just weight.

Planning jumbo routes

A jumbo's greater height and, for drawbar sets, its length and axle layout affect which roads, bridges and tunnels it can use. Planning routes with truck-specific limits keeps a jumbo legal and on time.
