What is HS Code?

An HS Code (Harmonized System code) is the globally standardised number used to classify goods for customs and international trade. Maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it gives every type of product a code that customs authorities worldwide recognise.

Why the HS Code matters

When goods cross a border, they are declared under their HS code. It determines the customs duties, taxes and any restrictions or licences that apply, and lets authorities identify a shipment from its description. An incorrect code can mean delays, fines or overpaid duty.

HS Code, commodity code and Intrastat

National systems build on the HS code: the EU's commodity code and the Intrastat numbers extend it with extra digits for tariffs and trade statistics. The first six digits are the same worldwide.

For a carrier, the HS code travels with the export paperwork. In the Orders Module from IMPARGO order and shipment data are captured centrally and transport documents generated digitally.
