HGV navigation systems (also called truck route planners, truck navigation systems or truck GPS) are specialised sat nav solutions designed for heavy goods vehicles. Unlike standard car navigation, they take into account vehicle height, weight, number of axles, hazardous goods and local HGV restrictions.
Based on this truck-specific data, the system calculates safe and legal routes that avoid low bridges, weight-restricted roads, tight turns, residential streets and other roads unsuitable for lorries. Many HGV navigation systems also include live traffic information, estimated arrival times (ETA), driving time limits and integration with fleet management or telematics platforms.
By routing trucks on appropriate roads, HGV navigation systems help reduce detours, fines and delays, improve driver safety and support more efficient, cost-effective transport planning.
