The Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC), formerly the shipping unit number (NVE), is a globally unique 18-digit number that identifies a single logistics unit, such as a carton, pallet or container. Assigned once and never reused, it lets every party in the transport chain track that unit from shipper to consignee.
The SSCC has 18 numeric digits based on the GS1-128 standard (formerly EAN-128):
The SSCC is usually carried on a GS1-128 barcode label on the logistics unit. Scanning it at each step links the physical unit to its record in warehouse management and shipping systems, which supports tracking, dispatch accuracy and product recalls.
