Road traffic regulations are the legally binding rules that govern how vehicles use public roads, covering speed limits, right of way, signage, stopping and parking, and how loads must be secured. In Germany these rules are set out in the Straßenverkehrsordnung (StVO).
Truck drivers and carriers must follow road traffic regulations at all times. They work alongside other rules specific to freight, such as driving and rest times, weight and dimension limits, and load-securing requirements.
Road traffic regulations should not be confused with the historical KVO (Kraftverkehrsordnung), a former German regulation on liability in long-distance haulage that was repealed in 1998. The StVO governs conduct on the road; the KVO governed haulage contracts and liability.
