A coil well is a trough shaped recess that runs along the loading floor of a truck or trailer and holds heavy steel coils securely in place during transport. The coil sits down inside the recess instead of standing on a flat deck, so the floor itself becomes part of the load securing.
You will also hear it called a coil trough or a coil recess, and a semi trailer built with one is normally sold as a coil well trailer. It is the answer whenever a steel mill or a service centre hands you rolled coil and asks for a truck.
Steel coils are round and can weigh several tonnes, which makes them hard to secure with straps or wedges alone. A cylinder standing on a flat deck wants to roll, and it touches the floor along a narrow strip, so friction helps you far less than it would under a boxed pallet.
Lowering a coil into the well stops it rolling or sliding sideways, so the load stays stable and safe. It also drops the centre of gravity and keeps the loaded height down, which is worth having on any run where the deck is already carrying a lot of weight.
The well is a channel set lengthways into the deck, usually along the centre line of a flatbed or curtain sider semi trailer. A coil rests on its curved surface down in the trough, so the well itself takes the sideways roll while the lashings deal with the fore and aft forces.
Coils are usually craned in from above, so coil work pairs naturally with a sliding roof trailer or an open flatbed. The crane can then lower the coil straight into the trough rather than working it in through the side.
A well stops the roll. It does not stop a coil surging forward under braking, so lashings, chocks, edge protectors and friction mats still go on exactly as the loading instruction says. Treat the trough as the first layer of restraint, never as the whole plan.
Weight distribution deserves the same care. A single coil concentrates several tonnes over a short stretch of deck, so where it sits in the well decides your axle loads long before it decides your gross weight. Position the coil first, then lash it.
When not carrying coils, the well can be covered with planks or boards so the trailer works like a normal flatbed or curtain sider. This makes coil well semi trailers versatile for steel and general freight, which is why hauliers on steel lanes rarely buy a coil only deck.
The covers still cost you something. They add tare, they take time to lift and stow, and a badly seated board is a trip hazard for whoever is up on the deck. If the return leg is palletised, confirm the well is closed and level before you promise the full loading metre to the next customer.
Ask the carrier three things: that the trailer really has a well and not just a reinforced floor, that the well is open and clear rather than boarded over for a pallet job, and that both ends of the trip can crane the load. A coil booked onto the wrong deck is a wasted day for everyone in the chain.
Then check the money. Steel lanes run heavy, and heavy tours are exactly where a guessed cost hurts, so price the trip on the vehicle you are actually sending. One habit pays for itself: record which trailers in your pool carry a well, and how long that well is, in the same place you keep the rest of your fleet data. When a coil enquiry lands on a Friday afternoon, you want to know which unit can take it without ringing round the yard.
