What does SILO mean in Road Freight?

In road freight, a silo is a cylindrical tank vehicle or trailer used to haul dry bulk goods, such as grain, flour, cement, plastics or coal, that are loaded and carried loose rather than packaged.

How silo vehicles work

The tank's shape is named after the farm silo used to store bulk material. Silo trucks have a pneumatic or gravity discharge system that unloads the contents quickly at the destination. They are common for agricultural, construction and industrial bulk shipping.

Planning silo transports

Because silo vehicles have specific dimensions and axle weights, their routes are best planned with truck-specific tools such as the IMPARGO truck route planner.
