Calculate truck toll costs across Europe

IMPARGO offers comprehensive toll cost calculations for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) across Europe, covering special tolls, bridge tolls, and tunnel tolls. Note: Ferry fares are not included in the toll calculation.

To Calculate and Compare Toll Costs for Your Trucks, Follow These Steps:

Step 1: Calculate route. 
Input start and end locations in the "Stops" section (→ Planner Module).

Step 2: Access toll summary. 
In the results bar at the screen's bottom, click on the "Toll" label to open the toll summary modal for the entire trip, including all stops. This breakdown will provide information on tolled and untolled kilometers for each country along your route. Alternatively, for a summary of a specific leg of the transport, click on the toll amount listed between locations in the "Stops" section.

Step 3: Switch to "By toll system". 
For an in-depth analysis by toll system, switch from the "By country" tab to the "By toll system" tab at the modal's top. This breakdown will provide information on the toll fees charged by the different toll systems along your route including tolls for bridges, tunnels, and special tolls.

Step 4: Compare after and before. 
In certain countries, we provide a comparison of toll costs before and after changes. This comparison aids in understanding the tolls that have been, are currently, or will be applicable.

Note:

• As ferry costs vary significantly for transport service providers, they are excluded from the toll cost calculation. However, they can be incorporated into the system through the → "Additional Charges" feature.
• Please note that the inclusion of Value Added Tax (VAT) in toll charges varies by country at IMPARGO. Some countries' toll fees are inclusive of VAT, whereas others are not. 
• For comprehensive details regarding which countries we do include VAT in the toll fees and which we do not, we invite you to contact our support team. Please send an email to info@impargo.de with the subject "Country List for VAT in Tolls". Our team will promptly provide you with a list of the relevant countries.

Whether a toll-free route pays off depends on the country. In France, tolls are mainly charged on the motorways run by concession companies, and many national roads are toll-free. In Germany, the truck toll has applied to all motorways and federal roads since July 2018, so a toll-free alternative there is usually much longer. The "Routing mode" field in the Planner shows you what the same tour costs with and without tolls, before you send the quote.

The Four Routing Modes at a Glance

You find the "Routing mode" field in the "Route options" section to the left of the map.

Note: "Avoid toll roads" only avoids tolled roads where an alternative exists. A small remaining toll is possible, so the toll in the results bar is not automatically 0.00 €. In Switzerland, the LSVA is charged on all public roads, so there is no toll-free alternative there. To keep a whole country out of the route, use the "Avoid countries" field in the same Route options (how to exclude countries from a truck route).

To Compare a Toll-Free Route With the Fastest Route, Follow These Steps:

Step 1: Open the Planner module.   
Click on the "P" in the left sidebar to open the → Planner module.

Step 2: Calculate the route with "Fastest (standard)".   
Enter start and end locations in the "Stops" section. In the "Route options", check that "Fastest (standard)" is selected in the "Routing mode" field. Note the Distance, Time, Toll (with VAT) and Total costs shown in the results bar.

Step 3: Select "Avoid toll roads".   
Select "Avoid toll roads" in the "Routing mode" field. The Planner recalculates the route straight away and updates the map and the results bar. In this mode the calculation often takes a few seconds longer.

Step 4: Compare the values.   
Compare the new values with your notes. What counts is not the toll alone but the sum of toll, driving time and kilometres, which is the Total costs figure. Click on the toll amount to open the toll summary and see in which country a toll is still charged.

Step 5: Set the mode for the tour.   
Leave the mode set to the one the tour should run on, and only then create the order with "Create new order" or send the quote with "Send".

Note: The results bar only shows "Total costs" when the browser window is wide. In a narrow window, compare Cost per KM times Distance.

Example: Paris to Rouen and Hamburg to Bonn

The same tour from Paris to Rouen, once with "Fastest (standard)" and once with "Avoid toll roads":

On this tour, "Avoid toll roads" saves 61.80 € in tolls and 52.84 € in total costs, and the trip takes 22 minutes longer. From Hamburg to Bonn it is the other way round: the toll-free route is 587.1 km instead of 444.7 km, takes 14 h 9 min instead of 7 h 53 min, and 0.63 € of toll remains. Total costs rise by about 175 € there, because the extra kilometres and hours cost more than the toll saves. That is why "Cost optimized" picks the same route as "Fastest (standard)" on this tour.

Figures from 7 October 2026 for a 40 t truck with 5+ axles and EURO 6, and a cost profile of 0.81 €/km and 34.63 €/h. Your figures depend on the vehicle, the cost profile and the departure date.

Note: "Cost optimized" and "Avoid toll roads" are part of the cost-optimized routing included in the Professional and Business plans (compare what each plan includes).

The Gross or Net Tolls feature makes toll calculations more flexible by letting you choose whether to include or exclude VAT in the displayed amount. This is helpful because VAT amounts might be reclaimed by transportation companies, making the refund of VAT by local governments a pass-through item and thus expense neutral. As a result, they should be excluded in offers. You can enable or disable VAT for tolls in these places:

1. via the "Advanced options" in the Planner
2. via the "Toll summary" modal in the Planner
3. via the "Add order" modal

Via the "Advanced Options" in the Planner

Step 1: Find the "Advanced options". 
In the left side menu, in the "Route Options" section, scroll down and click on the "Advanced options" button.

Step 2: Toggle "Include VAT in toll" checkbox. 
Find it in the "Advanced options" section and select or deselect it as needed.

Via the "Toll Summary" Modal in the Planner

Step 1: Find the "Toll summary" section. 
Click on the "Toll summary" icon near the toll costs, in the results bar at the bottom of the Planner.

Step 2: Include or exclude VAT from toll. 
Find and toggle the "Include VAT in toll" checkbox as desired. This will instantly reflect on the toll cost calculations provided.

Via the "Add Order" Modal

Step 1: Go to "Create order". 
Access the order creation modal via the Planner or Orders modules.

Step 2: Adjust VAT preferences in the "Additional settings". 
Scroll down and click on "Additional settings". There you can adjust VAT preferences while creating a transport order or offer.

Notes:

• Please note that IMPARGO applies VAT exclusion on a national basis using the nationwide VAT rate, not on a toll provider basis.
• There may be exceptions or specific tolls with different VAT rates that are not considered by the system.
• In some countries, VAT is not applied to tolls. In such cases, the toll amount with VAT is the same as the toll amount without VAT.
• E.g. in Belgium, out of three regions only Wallonia charges a 21% VAT on tolls. Therefore, for simplicity reasons we do not apply 21% VAT in Wallonia.
• Once you enable or disable VAT, the setting stays active across the system until you change it.
• Saved orders keep the VAT setting they had when created. To update it, you'll need to adjust the settings manually.

To Compare Toll Costs Before vs After Changes, Follow These Steps:

Step 2: Access toll summary. 
In the results bar at the screen's bottom, click on the "Toll" label to open the toll summary modal for the entire trip, including all stops. On the "By country" tab, the "Toll" column shows the amount that applies to your trip, and to the right of it the comparison columns show what the same route costs in the periods either side of a rate change, each with the difference in percent.

The comparison columns follow your departure date. They always describe the periods other than the one being charged, so their labels change with the trip. A Dutch trip departing on 31 August 2026 is compared against "Before 07/26 (NL)" and "After 09/26 (NL)", because the standard rate applies to it. A trip departing in October 2026 is charged at the discounted rate instead, so both comparisons look backwards: "Before 07/26 (NL)" and "Before 09/26 (NL)". Countries without a rate change show "N/A".

What Are the Toll Changes in Germany for Heavy Trucks?

Starting July 1, 2024, HGV trucks weighing over 3.5 tons are subject to toll charges in Germany. If a truck or vehicle is 3.5 tons or less, including when towing a trailer, it won't have to pay tolls. "Handicraft journeys" are also exempt from tolls, but this only applies to vehicles under 7.5 tons.

These new tolls will affect your finances, so you'll need to include these extra costs when planning your budget and routes. That's why you will find the toll summary showing the comparison between toll prices before and after July 01, 2024. 

What Are the Toll Changes in the Netherlands for Heavy Trucks?

Since July 1, 2026, the Netherlands applies a new kilometre-based truck toll (vrachtwagenheffing), replacing the flat-rate Eurovignette. All trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 3,500 kg, whether registered in the Netherlands or abroad, are subject to this charge on Dutch motorways and selected provincial roads. The rate per kilometre depends on the vehicle's weight and CO₂ emission class: the cleaner and lighter the truck, the lower the charge.

The Netherlands changed its truck toll twice in 2026: the per-kilometre charge replaced the Eurovignette on 1 July, and a temporary reduction started on 1 September. The Planner prices your trip on the departure date you set, and shows both of those changes next to it for comparison, so you always see what the same route costs either side of them.

Temporary discount (1 September to 31 December 2026): The Netherlands applies a temporary 22.3% reduction to all vrachtwagenheffing rates during this period; the regular indexed tariffs return on 1 January 2027. IMPARGO reflects this automatically: set a departure date between 1 September and 31 December 2026 and the toll summary shows the NL toll at the discounted rate, so your before and after comparison and your quotes stay accurate.

Pricing a January load. You can plan for any date. Set a departure date in January 2027 and the reduction no longer applies, so the Planner prices the trip at the standard rate again and you can see the increase against today before you send the quote. Bear in mind that the 2027 tariffs are indexed and published in October 2026, so a January figure calculated today assumes the current rates carry over unchanged.

The two 2026 changes on one example route. A 472.9 km tour with five stops between Almere and Geldern, 40 t, tolls shown with VAT:

Only the Dutch section changes, so the Dutch toll falls by the full 22.3% while the total falls by 21.1%. Your own figures depend on the vehicle's weight, EURO class and CO2 class.

Note: Electric trucks and vans (emission-free vehicles) up to 4,250 kg with a Dutch registration are automatically exempt from the toll. Emergency services (police, fire brigade, ambulance) are also excluded.

How the Toll Period Is Chosen for Multi-Day Tours

IMPARGO applies one toll period to the whole tour, and that period is chosen by the departure date you set in the "Stops" section. This matters as soon as a tour crosses a rate change.

Example: a multi-day tour that departs on 30 December 2026 and runs into January is calculated entirely at the reduced rate, because that is the rate for its departure date, even though the standard rates return on 1 January 2027. In reality the Netherlands charges the toll on the kilometres you actually drive, so the kilometres driven from 1 January onwards are charged at the standard rate.

To see both sides of that change, plan the same route twice with a departure date either side of it, or read the comparison column for the other period. For a tour crossing 1 September 2026 the two comparison columns already show you both amounts.

To Calculate Tolls for Multiple Truck Routes, Follow These Steps:

Step 1: Locate feature. 
Navigate to the → CargoApps Dashboard and locate the "Route Mass Calculation" feature to start calculating your routes in bulk, inclusive of toll charges and toll comparison calculation.

Step 2: Download template. 
Download the template directly from the Dashboard to understand the required structure for your routes table.

Step 3: Prepare template. 
Create an Excel sheet containing the route information for your stops. Make sure to organize the columns according to the available options in the IMPARGO system. For geolocation, choose one of the following three options:

• Full address field: Provide one field with the complete address for each stop.
• Longitude & Latitude fields: Enter the longitude and latitude coordinates for each stop in two separate fields.
• Country, City, Zip code and Street fields: Maintain four separate fields with country, city, zip code and street for each stop.

Step 4: Import template.

1. Import the template to the platform for calculation.
2. Choose toll and routing relevant parameters like number of axles, vehicle gross weight, etc.
3. Ensure accurate data interpretation by aligning the column tags from your Excel sheet with the corresponding fields in the IMPARGO system. Accomplish this by clicking and holding the left mouse button on the tag, then dragging it to the appropriate field.
4. Confirm whether the first row of your Excel spreadsheet serves as headers for column names or as address information. Subsequently, adjust the system's recognition settings to reflect this by either selecting or deselecting the option "First Row Contains Column Names".
5. Click on "Download".

Step 5: Wait for result. 
The system will take a while to calculate all routes. Check the notification bell on the top right corner for downloading the Excel file with calculated toll costs or navigate to the dashboard to an overview of all exports by clicking on "See all exports".
