What is LTL in transport logistics?

LTL, also known as Less-Than-Truckload, refers to the process of managing and coordinating the transportation of relatively small shipments that do not require the use of an entire truck. LTL shipments are typically larger than parcel shipments but smaller than full truckload shipments.

In LTL logistics, multiple shipments from different customers are consolidated and transported together in a single truck to optimize efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This consolidation helps to utilize the available space in the truck more effectively, reducing transportation costs for individual shippers.

LTL transport logistics involves various activities, including:

Pick-up and consolidation: LTL carriers collect shipments from multiple customers at different locations and consolidate them at a central hub or terminal. This consolidation allows for efficient use of space and reduces the number of trucks needed.

Freight classification and rating: LTL shipments are classified based on factors such as weight, dimensions, density, and freight class. Carriers use standardized classification systems to determine shipping rates for each shipment.

Freight tracking and tracing: LTL logistics providers offer tracking and tracing services that allow shippers and consignees to monitor the status and location of their shipments throughout the transportation process. This provides visibility and helps in managing inventory and meeting customer expectations.

Linehaul transportation: Once the shipments are consolidated, they are transported on the linehaul route to the destination terminal closest to the final delivery location. Linehaul transportation involves the movement of LTL shipments between terminals over longer distances.

Delivery and distribution: At the destination terminal, shipments are sorted and loaded onto local delivery trucks for final distribution to individual consignees. This last-mile delivery ensures that the shipments reach their intended recipients.

LTL transport logistics providers play a crucial role in managing the complexities of LTL shipments, including shipment consolidation, freight optimization, routing, tracking, and documentation. Their expertise helps shippers minimize costs, improve delivery times, and streamline their supply chain operations.
